Nepali ultra runner Sunmaya Budha has made history by winning the prestigious La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail in Italy.
Held in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the race covers 120 kilometres. Sunmaya completed the course in 13 hours, 33 minutes, and 1 second, setting a new record. The previous record was held by France’s Caroline Chaverot, who finished in 13 hours, 40 minutes, and 34 seconds back in 2013.
In the early stages of the race, Budha ran alongside Australia’s Lucy Bartholomew. But in the decisive stretch, she picked up her pace, pulled ahead, and crossed the finish line in first place.
The race organisers hailed Sunmaya Budha on social media as the new queen of the La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail 120K, praising her measured and strategic approach to the race. They noted that she had made history in Cortina d’Ampezzo by breaking a 13-year-old course record.
Sunmaya Budha hails from Patarasi Rural Municipality in Jumla district. Her victory has been widely celebrated as a further boost to Nepal’s growing reputation in international ultra trail running.
