Kathmandu, May 29
The International Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) Day is being celebrated today with different programmes. This day is marked on May 29 every year to commemorate the first ascent to Mt. Sagarmatha by New Zealand’s Edmund Hilary and Nepal’s Tenzing Norge Sherpa.
The world’s tallest peak is a symbol of Nepal’s national pride, tourism development and international identity. Various government organisations, tourism entrepreneurs, mountaineering agencies, and local-level authorities have organised programmes on mountain tourism, safe tourism, environmental conservation, and related issues.
The stakeholders have called for providing top priority to conservation measures of mountains, as the impacts of climate change have been visible in recent years. For Nepal, mountain tourism is a major driver of the economy, employment generation, and foreign exchange earnings.
