President Ram Chandra Paudel has appointed Balen Shah, the parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, as the Prime Minister.
He was appointed in accordance with Article 76(1) of the Constitution as the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives.
This marks the first time since the promulgation of Nepal’s Constitution in 2015 that a Prime Minister has been appointed under this provision. It is also the first time that a member of the Madhesi community has become the Prime Minister of Nepal.
Shah, who resigned as Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City to contest the elections held on Falgun 21, became Prime Minister immediately upon entering Parliament for the first time.
