Nepal sees major improvement in Global Terrorism Index

According to the list of countries affected by terrorist activities, Nepal’s position has significantly improved compared to the previous year.

According to the 2026 report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, an independent non-profit organisation headquartered in Sydney, Australia, Nepal’s ranking has improved notably from last year.

Nepal, which was ranked 68th in 2025, is now ranked 89th. This indicates that the security situation in Nepal has strengthened and terrorist activities have decreased.

It is stated that Nepal’s improvement is quite significant compared to other countries. The report mentions that no terrorist activities or attacks were recorded in Nepal in 2025. It also notes that since the Maoists became part of the ruling coalition, no reports of terrorism have been observed.

Among the 163 countries listed, Pakistan ranks first. India is in 13th place, having dropped two positions from last year, when it was ranked 11th. It is reported that terrorist incidents in India decreased by 43 percent over the past year.

Currently, Afghanistan ranks 11th, Myanmar 14th, and Bangladesh 42nd. Bhutan and Sri Lanka are listed among countries with zero terrorist activity.

South Asia most affected by terrorism

According to the report, South Asia has remained the region most affected by terrorism for ten consecutive years. For the first time, Pakistan has reached the top position on the list and has become the country most affected by terrorism.

Afghanistan’s situation has improved, and it has now dropped out of the top 10 most affected countries.

In 2025, deaths caused by terrorism worldwide decreased by 28 percent. The number of terrorist attacks also declined by about 22 percent, reaching 2,944 incidents. Overall, the situation improved in 81 countries this year, while it worsened in 19 countries.

Situation in Western countries

In Western countries, deaths caused by terrorism have increased by around 280 percent. According to a European Union (EU) report, a total of 58 terrorist attacks were recorded across 14 EU member states in 2024.

France experienced 14 attacks, while Germany recorded 6. Across EU countries, 449 people were arrested in connection with terrorism-related cases. In the United Kingdom alone, more than 3,000 people were arrested.
