Kathmandu, January 18
Stakeholders staged a protest at Maitighar again today against the riverbank setback standard imposed along river corridors in the Kathmandu Valley.
The demonstration was held in opposition to a Supreme Court ruling that requires an additional 20-metre setback from riverbanks.
Stakeholders have repeatedly protested in recent days, demanding a review of the verdict. Under the existing regulation, a 20-metre setback was already mandatory, but the Supreme Court ruling added a further 20-metre requirement.
Protesters have described the ruling as unjust and unconstitutional. The concerned committee has also demanded the impeachment of the two judges who issued the verdict—Anand Mohan Bhattarai and Binod Sharma.
Citing the impracticality of implementing the decision, then Law Secretary Phanindra Gautam filed a petition on behalf of the government seeking a review of the verdict.
The protest was organised by the Land Rights Protection Committee and other concerned stakeholders.
