Egg prices rise, wholesale rate reaches Rs 500 per crate

Kathmandu, October 27

Egg prices have increased again. The Nepal Layer Poultry Farmers’ Association has raised the price of eggs effective from Monday.

The association decided to hike the prices citing reduced production and increased consumption. According to Association Chairperson Binod Pokharel, with the new rate, the wholesale price of large eggs has reached Rs 500 per crate, while medium-sized eggs now cost Rs 450 per crate.

Compared to the previous rate, the price has gone up by Rs 50 per crate. The new rates have been determined based on the Chitwan market.

Pokharel said the retail price for consumers remains around Rs 22 per egg and claimed the hike would not significantly affect consumers.

“There will only be a change of about 50 to 70 paisa per egg in the retail market, so the impact won’t be major,” he said.

As producers increase the wholesale price, wholesalers sell eggs to retailers at higher rates, which ultimately raises the price consumers pay.
