Suspects nabbed in Boudha khukuri attack following month-long manhunt

On the night of July 27 at around 9:30 pm, an indiscriminate khukuri attack was carried out on Jeet Bahadur Moktan at Bahundhara, Boudha. Originally from Roshi Rural Municipality-10, Kavre, he had been living in Boudha.

That night, after having snacks at D Café in Naya Basti, he stepped outside, and as he was heading home on his motorcycle the attack took place. He fell off the motorcycle and tried to run, the group chased him and kept striking him with khukuris.

A group of about four people slashed Moktan on his stomach, back, arms, and other parts of his body. After he collapsed from the injuries, the group fled the scene.

Locals rescued him and took him to Nepal Medical College, Jorpati, for treatment. From there, he was referred to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, and later shifted to B & B Hospital.

After receiving long-term treatment at B & B Hospital, he was discharged. However, during this time, the attackers were not arrested. A month later, police arrested three people accused of involvement in the khukuri attack.

According to sources, the team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, with the help of Delhi Police, arrested them in Delhi and brought them to Kathmandu.

SP and spokesperson of the Crime Investigation Office, Kaji Kumar Acharya, said that the main leader of the attack and two others were nabbed.

Although police officially claimed they were arrested from Gaddachauki, sources confirmed the arrests were made in Delhi.

Those arrested include 25-year-old Lobsang Tamang of Banskhark, Panchpokhari Thangpal Rural Municipality–1, Sindhupalchok, currently living in Jorpati; 33-year-old Suman Blon Tamang alias Chuman of Shivpuri Rural Municipality–1, Nuwakot, also living in Jorpati; and 34-year-old Kumar Blon Tamang of Shivpuri–1, also residing in Jorpati.

An arrest warrant had been issued against them on charges of attempted murder. They had been absconding since the attack.

Police found that the main planner of the attack was Lobsang. Under his plan, Moktan was attacked with the intent to kill.

Lobsang, arrested in Delhi, linked his motive to his father. According to police officials, he confessed that he attacked Moktan to avenge his father. On the same day, around 4 pm, Moktan had allegedly assaulted his father.

“Since he beat up my father, I attacked him in revenge,” one investigating officer quoted Lobsang as saying.

Reports suggest that Lobsang’s father, Ashok, and Moktan, the injured victim, often played “Okhar” (a gambling game) together. During a dispute over this, Moktan had beaten Ashok. Upon learning this, Lobsang launched the attack on Moktan that same night.

Police suspect there might have been other disputes between them as well. They believe issues ranging from disagreements on social media platforms like TikTok to conflicts involving women may have also been factors.

Lobsang’s background check

Talking to Onlinekhabar, a police source informed that the attack planner, Lobsang, is a member of the Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali Congress. He is considered close to Sanjay Lama (alias Jhige), president of Tarun Dal Sindhupalchok. Police officials say Jhige himself does not have a good background.

Additionally, police believe that Lobsang had recently become active in gang-related activities in the Boudha and Jorpati areas. Earlier, there had even been a verbal complaint that he had attacked someone with a helmet in a snooker house in Makkalbari.
