Of late, the Nepali music scene is growing at an unprecedented speed with thousands of musicians actively contributing their creations. But, some of them are popular and some of them are not.  There are some underrated Nepali musicians who have a lot of potential and already have good work but somehow they are less explored by the audience.

In this regard, today, we have brought a list of underrated Nepali musicians. Keep in mind that the list includes both the solo singers and bands.

1. Rijan Giri

Rijan Giri, in a pool of emerging Nepali musicians, is a man with very unique voice quality. His most popular songs are Kamal Ko Ful, Sandhya and Rani Banaima.  The last one was also performed at Tuborg Open Session.  Giri’s songs range from the folk genre to ballad and slow rock, proving his versatility.

Likewise, his music videos are based on giving social messages. For instance, the music video of Kamal Ko Ful is an attempt to inspire Nepali youth to return to their motherland. Similarly, his music video for another song Sandhya is based on Nepali inter-caste love, which is still stigmatised in the Nepali society.

2. Kristina Allen

Kristina Allen has such a soulful voice that can make you fall in love anytime.

In 2021, she released her latest album Dhairyata (Patience), and trust us that every song from the album is worth listening to. But, sadly the album has very minimal views on YouTube (769 views in four months).  Allen’s songs mostly depict her experiences in love, personal growth and life.

Allen made her debut in Nepali music in 2011 by releasing her first album Na Baadha Na at the age of 14. She is also a versatile artist. Since the day I, she has been singing songs based on various genres that range from folk to blue and pop.

Nepali is Allen’s second language, but surprisingly, as one of the Nepali musicians, she has flawlessly expressed her emotions through the Nepali songs.

3. Rachana Dahal

Rachana Dahal does not only have a powerful voice, but her lyrics are also equally powerful. Her lyrics discuss social issues that are rarely discussed in the form of music.

For instance, her debut song Bhumari is centred on how relationships become toxic and affect someone’s mental health whereas, Soch tells you about sexual abuse and how society turns indifferent to it.

A popular face among emerging Nepali musicians, Dahal has over 8,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel, but that is not enough at least for an artist like Dahal who has been exposing the various societal issues that have been affecting thousands of lives.

4. Ujjwal Sagar

If you are fond of listening to love songs by Nepali musicians, you must have Ujjwal Sagar’s songs on your playlist.  His debut song, Dhoon, expresses the heart of an artist whose poetry would be incomplete without the presence of his loved one’s soul. Likewise, his latest music video for the song Pencil may take you back to your school days.  It may bring up memories of a childhood love for whom you were unable to express your feelings.

Lately, Sagar has also proved himself as a versatile artist who would not only sing but also compose music for other artists as well. He has done a magnificent job in Nishan Bhattarai’s classical song Timi Chhau Ra Geet Haru. The song is well received by thousands of listeners.

5. Atharva

For a rock fan, the band Atharva are something that they should not miss listening to among contemporary Nepali musicians. The band made their debut with their album Yoddha in 2006. All the songs from the album are so energetic and powerful that you cannot stop yourself from banging your head.

One of the best things that you would get in Atharva’s numbers is they do brilliant guitar work in all of their songs.  With that, their lyrics are also equally powerful, which completely do justice to their heavy music. Their lyrics talk about war, warriors, unity and patriotism.

6. Salin-Abhishek

The duo of emerging Nepali musicians Salin Magar and Abhishek Karki are known as Salin-Abhishek in the music fraternity.  Releasing Pachutoh, the duo made their debut in 2018.  To date, the duo have released 10 songs, and trust us, each of them is worth listening to. The melodies in their song would never fail to amaze the listeners.

Jhari and Najikidai Chhu are their most popular songs with views of over 83,000 and 91,000 respectively on YouTube.  Their other songs are also equally beautiful but are less explored by the listeners. The duo who usually are into love pop songs have proved their versatility through the song Aankha Lagla. The song is based on folk beats that can even make you dance.
