A police post in Saptari district of southeastern Nepal has been found registering a complaint of rape as a case of beating.

Two adolescent girls, aged 16 and 17, were reportedly raped by three men in Lalpur, Khadak municipality-10 of the district, on September 10. The next day, an alleged victim and her mother had gone to the Kalyanpur Area Police Office to register the complaint.

But, the police officials there registered it as a beating case, according to the mother.

Later, community leaders had interfered in the case and settled it by making the alleged rapists pay Rs 550,000 to the rapists. Khadak municipality’s mayor Hemayu Haque and ward 11 chairperson Ram Krishna Chaudhary were also found involved in settling the case illegally.

Meanwhile, District Police Office Chief, SP Rajendra Dhamal, has denied the charge, saying the mother-daughter duo have come to the police station with a complaint of beating.
