Kathmandu, June 21

Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) chief Kamal Thapa says the government is showing signs of totalitarianism, but the main opposition the Nepali Congress is not doing anything about it.

Addressing a meeting of the party in Kathmandu, Thapa said that democracy in Nepal is under threat because of the political parties’ wrong policies and corrupt tendencies. He added that the NCP is using its mandate to capture state power, instead of addressing the concerns of the people.

The government handpicks people to appoint them to constitutional bodies, educational institutions, foreign missions and security agencies, the former Deputy Prime Minister said. Thapa alleged that the Prime Minister is trying to centralise power, restrict press freedom and the human rights commission.

While all this is happening, the main opposition does not have will and the determination to confron the government, said the RPP leader.
