Police use force against agitated substitute teachers

Kathmandu, March 3

Police have used force against agitated substitute teachers who tried to enter into a ‘no-protest’ zone outside Parliament in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu.

The temporary teachers from around the country, who were recruited as substitutes to teachers deputed as resource persons, organised a rally in Maitighar and protesters marched towards Parliament. Police said that they were compelled to use force after the teachers did not heed calls to stop.

The teachers were agitated after the Ministry of Education decided to order all resource persons to return to their posts and the substitute teachers to leave.

The demonstrators have accused the government of denying them the right to employment guaranteed by the constitution.
