Kathmandu, February 19

The government has decided to regulate free wifi services available in different parts of the country to prevent cybercriminals from abusing free internet.

According to spokesperson for Nepal Telecommunication Authority Min Prasad Aryal, a new rule is being made which will make the ISPs that install free wifi responsible for any crime committed using free wifi.

“We have taken this step to curb cyber crimes in the city. This rule will make wifi safe to use and stop criminal activities,” adds Aryal.

The new rule states that the ISPs installing free wifis in various public spaces will have to follow certain rules and regulation before installing their services.

The ISPs have been asked to limit the number of users. The authority has also asked ISPs to install security devices and update the access points on a timely basis.

The names and phone numbers of users using free wifi will also need to be recorded. According to the new rule, login and log out time should also be recorded in the system.
