The Nepal government says it is beginning to measure the highest peak of the world, Mount Everest, once again. It says the task will be complete in next two years.

The Department of Survey informs that a point on Nepal-India border will be taken as a base for the measurement whereas China’s support will be support for GPS data and gravity survey. India will also be asked for cooperation to measure the height of the border point.

The Department officials say suggestions collected at a recent international seminar on the height of Mount Everest will also be considered during the project.

The agency has already finalised a working procedure for the task. The trigonometrical levelling method will be used.

The peak is recognised as the highest peak of the world since 1947. Its height was considered to be 8,778 metres then.

Since then, a number of surveys have been carried out and its height is considered to be 8,848 metres now.
