Kathmandu, June 22

The Rastriya Janata Party Nepal’s General Secretary Brijesh Kumar Gupta says the protests to be launched by his party against the June 28 polls cannot have much effect.

He says the party cannot foil election activities as its own cadres have filed candidacy in many parts of the country.

“We had tried to foil the environment till the date of filing nominations,” he says, “But, it cannot be continued till the voting day.”

Gupta himself is currently in his home district Kapilbastu to support election campaign of his cadres.

“I cannot show you the double standard,” he clarifies, “How can I launch protests to foil the polls in which my own cadres are candidates?”

The leader also says the party cannot take any action against cadres who have independently filed nominations for the polls.

Gupta as well as another senior leader in the party, Sarvendra Nath Shukla, had advocated with the party to take part in the elections. The majority, however, had not accepted their line.

Many cadres have filed independent nominations in Gupta’s Kapilbastu and Shukla’s Rupandehi districts in Province 5.

Though it has been speculated that Gupta and Shukla motivated their cadres to take part in the polls, Gupta denies the role.

“I have not said anything,” he says, “The friends are contesting independently. I extend my best wishes to them.”

“If people are ready to go to polls, what does our boycott matter?”
