NC general convention to happen on time, despite Sushil’s death

Kathmandu, February 21

The Nepali Congress’ 13th general convention will take place on schedule, despite the demise of party President Sushil Koirala.

An emergency meeting of the party, held after Koirala’s death, decided not to postpone the general convention scheduled to take place on March 3-6 as both establishment and Sher Bahadur Deuba factions agreed on sticking to the schedule agreed upon earlier. Party vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel presided over the meeting.

A Congress central working committee member said regional and district conventions will begin in remaining districts from February 13. In some Tarai districts, regional conventions have not taken place yet, thereby delaying district conventions. In other places, district conventions have already taken place, with poll results already out in most of these districts. “The 13-day mourning ends on February 21. We will have to move the party forward after that,” a leader said, stressing the need to hold the party GC on time.

He said the party will not organise formal programmes for 13 days, but election campaigns will commence from February 13. The election committee will take a final call on this.

As per the Congress statute, NC Vice-president has become acting president till the GC.
