55 Biplav Maoists held in Nepal while enforcing transport strike

Kathmandu, July 17

Police on Sunday allegedly arrested 55 cadres of the Biplav-led CPN-Maoist while they were staging protests and enforcing a nationwide transport strike against police excesses at a squatters’ settlement in Sarlahi. Maila Lama, a leader of the Maoist party, said police arrested 35 of their cadres from Butwal in Rupandehi and 20 from Kalanki, Balaju and Chabahil in Kathmandu.

Police arrested seven activists, including Yogendra Kumal, president of the party’s labour organisation, from Kalanki, nine people, including Lokesh BK, coordinator of the party’s Kathmandu Valley Special Coordination Committee, from Balaju, and four people, including Rabi Gole, vice-president of the National Youth People’s Volunteers’ Bureau, from Chabahil while they were enforcing the transport strike that the party had announced throughout the country from 9 am to 10 am.
