5 medical colleges in Kathmandu likely to get permission even after House passes Medical Education Bill

Kathmandu, August 10

Five new medical colleges are likely to get permission to operate in Kathmandu Valley even after Parliament passes Medical Education Bill soon.

If the House endorses the Bill as forwarded by a taskforce in the Women, Children, Senior Citizens and Social Welfare Committee today, the colleges which have already met criteria and fulfilled various procedures for establishment will not be barred from commencing operation.

It means the Manmohan Medical College, in which various CPN-UML leaders and lawmakers have shares, will also be established among others.

The House is under pressure of various stakeholders to impose a complete ban on establishment of new institutions in Kathmandu Valley for next 10 years as demanded by Dr Govinca KC, who has been fasting unto death for last 18 days putting forth various demands including endorsement of the Bill.

He, however, has said he will not accept the Bill if it gives permission to some colleges and ignores recommendations of a panel led by Kedar Bhakta Mathema.
