27 Nepalis detained in Cambodia, 211 seek repatriation assistance through embassy

Kathmandu, May 8

A total of 211 Nepalis currently in Cambodia have contacted the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, seeking assistance to return home. According to a notice issued by the embassy, the 211 individuals, who are staying illegally in Cambodia, reached out requesting repatriation support.

“The embassy had requested Nepalis in Cambodia to fill out an online form to collect information about their condition. So far, 211 Nepalis, including nine women, have completed the form,” the embassy stated.

The embassy said the individuals who made contact had arrived in Cambodia between May 2022 and May 2026. It also revealed that 27 Nepalis are currently being held in various Cambodian prisons pending trial on different charges.

According to the embassy, lawyers who understand the local language may be required during the legal proceedings. The embassy further informed that 25 Nepalis are returning to Nepal today. The embassy has also urged Nepalis to purchase only tickets with connecting flights while returning to Nepal from Cambodia.

“While returning from Cambodia to Nepal, please purchase only tickets with connecting flights,” the embassy stated. “Buying tickets without connecting flights may require a transit visa for the transit country, and passengers may also need to recheck their luggage, making the journey more complicated and difficult.”

The embassy added that it has received information that Nepalis travelling to Cambodia had paid between Rs 200,000 and Rs 800,000 to various individuals.
