Around 1,000 inmates at the Central Prison in Nuwakot have been rescued from the impact of the floods that swept through areas from Tibet in China to Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan.
The prison, located at Khampacamp in Bidur Municipality-3 along the Trishuli River, sustained partial damage but was spared from being swept away by the floodwaters.
According to prison chief Bhesh Bahadur Kunwar, the prison’s administrative building and the Nepal Police security unit building were damaged. Other structures around the prison were swept away by the flood.
Floodwaters entered the first floor of the building where inmates are housed, but the building itself was not swept away, Kunwar said.
Around 1,000 inmates and the security personnel guarding them are safe. Following the flooding, all inmates were moved to a secure block.
Floods have caused extensive damage in various riverside areas of Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
