New police chief in Dhanusha on the eve of voting; opposition says Nidhi’s plan

SP Chakra Bahadur Singh

Kathmandu, September 17

The government on Sunday changed the chief of Dhanusha District Police Office.

Parties and stakeholders have suspected that the change in police chief of the district of Province 2, which will hold local level elections on Monday, has some political motives.

SP Lalmani Acharya, the incumbent DPO Chief, has been transferred to the Nepal Police headquarters. SP Chakra Bahadur Singh has replaced him.

Chief District Officer Dilip Chapagain says Singh has already taken the charge of office.

Opposition parites have said the government made the transfer under the wish of former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Bimalendra Nidhi. Nidhi hails from the same district and he is currently in Dhanusha to fuel the party’s election campaigns.

Earlier, it was reported that Nidhi blocked the transfer of SP Mira Chaudhary to the district as she does not entertain political pressure.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission says the transfer does not breach the election code of conduct as the government has already received the approval for the move.
