Kathmandu, February 20

Former Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa has been elected President of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, considered the country’s principal right-wing force.

Thapa defeated his closest competitor Pradeep Bikram Rana in a one-sided contest by 2,804 to 251 votes, party leader Rajaram Bartaula told Onlinekhabar.

According to the party,  3,136 votes were cast in the election held at the party’s general convention in Kathmandu. A total of 81 votes were deemed invalid.

Thapa’s election comes just days after senior leader Prakash Chandra Lohani withdrew his candidacy for the post.
