We are ready if NCP is incapable of picking speaker: Deuba

Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba is welcomed by his cadres at Biratnagar Airport, on Tuesday, September 10, 2019.

Biratnagar, January 15

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said his party will be ready to field its candidate for the speaker’s election if the ruling Nepal Communist Party fails to find one from the party.

The main opposition party leader’s statement comes after the ruling party failed to find a candidate for the position, apparently owing to internal disputes in the party. Due to the party’s indecision about picking the candidate, the meeting of the House of Representatives has been put off repeatedly in the past month.

Hence, Deuba calls the ruling party to stop holding the House hostage.

Speaking with journalists in Biratnagar on Wednesday, the former prime minister clarified that his party was for endorsing the Millennium Challenge Corporation agreement from Parliament as soon as possible.

In another context, he said the party would not change the dates fixed for the next general convention despite dissent in the party.
