Search and rescue efforts have been intensified at the Trishuli-3A Hydropower Project in Rasuwa after the devastating Bhotekoshi flood on August 26 left people trapped inside the project’s tunnel.
Engineer Shriram Neupane, citing the Nepali Army involved in the rescue operation, said rescuers received information that voices of people were heard from inside the tunnel.
Nepali Army and Armed Police Force teams have entered the tunnel and intensified efforts to locate and rescue those trapped inside, according to Neupane.
“The rescue team received information that voices of people were heard from inside the tunnel,” Neupane wrote on Facebook. “The fact that voices have been heard from inside the tunnel is an encouraging sign.”
In a subsequent update, Neupane said the voices of more than one person had been confirmed.
According to him, rescuers called out to those inside, saying, “Do not panic, we are rescuing you.” A response was then heard from inside the tunnel.
“The rescue operation is still ongoing,” Neupane wrote.
The Bhotekoshi flood on August 26 caused extensive damage in Rasuwa and affected infrastructure around the hydropower project. Rescue teams are continuing their efforts to reach the people believed to be trapped inside the tunnel.
