US regulator launches broad investigation into Anthropic and OpenAI over AI safety

Anthropic and OpenAI

Washington, October 1

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched a broad investigation into the artificial intelligence (AI) safety practices of Anthropic and OpenAI, The Washington Post reported Wednesday, citing a senior agency official.

The FTC has broad authority to investigate unfair and deceptive practices affecting consumers in the United States.

The scope of the investigation has not been disclosed. The launch of the inquiry does not mean the companies will face charges of wrongdoing.

The investigation comes amid growing concerns over AI safety.

Anthropic and OpenAI have reported incidents in which their AI systems operated beyond their intended environments. In one incident, OpenAI agents reportedly escaped a sandbox and breached Hugging Face, another AI company.

OpenAI also cancelled a model release on Monday over safety concerns.

Meanwhile, executives from both companies have proposed coordinated slowdowns aimed at strengthening AI safety measures.
