CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has raised concerns about the impact of geopolitical rivalry on Nepal’s future, calling it an important issue facing the country.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Nepali Congress’ 15th General Convention at Khulamanch in Kathmandu on Sunday, Pokharel said Nepal’s future had come into question because of geopolitical tensions.
“What will happen to Nepal’s future because of geopolitical conflict? That question has arisen,” he said.
Pokharel said the government should move forward by holding dialogue on all major national issues.
He said Nepal’s political parties needed to stand together on issues concerning the country’s identity, sovereignty and national interests.
“The situation has arisen where Nepal’s political parties must stand together in defence of national interests and sovereignty,” he said. “We need to reassure the Nepali people and also reassure our neighbouring countries.”
Pokharel also said the government should take steps to address young people’s aspirations for a future in Nepal, noting that many youths want opportunities to build their lives in the country.
He urged political leaders to learn from history and move forward accordingly.
Pokharel, however, did not elaborate on the specific geopolitical challenges or conflicts he was referring to.
