UK tightens visa rules, makes A-Level english mandatory for some immigrants

Kathmandu, October 15

The United Kingdom is introducing stricter visa rules that will require some immigrants to demonstrate A-level (advanced secondary level) English proficiency to enter the country, according to a report by the BBC.

The new measures, which take effect on January 8, 2026, will apply to certain graduate applicants as well as those seeking Skilled Worker or Scale-up visas. The British government said the new regulations are part of a broader plan to reduce immigration, as outlined in its white paper published in May.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated, “If you come to this country, you must learn our language and contribute to our society.” She added, “The UK has always welcomed people who come to contribute. But it is unacceptable for migrants to arrive here without learning our language and being unable to participate in national life.”
