At least nine people have died and four remain missing after floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Dujuan in eastern Japan.
Heavy rainfall in the Kanto region on Monday caused flooding and landslides in several areas around Tokyo. According to local media reports, six deaths have been confirmed in Chiba Prefecture alone.
Among the deceased was a man in his 50s who reportedly fell into a bamboo grove while operating heavy machinery to clear mud and debris from a landslide. The body of another man was found inside a submerged vehicle.
Three people also died in Kanagawa Prefecture. A woman in her 60s reportedly died after a landslide struck her house and buried it under mud.
Police and firefighters are continuing search and rescue operations for those still missing.
After Typhoon Dujuan reached Japan’s eastern Pacific coast on Monday, record rainfall was recorded in the Kanto region and the Izu Islands. The heavy rain triggered landslides and caused rivers to overflow, affecting areas around Tokyo.
More than 500 buildings in Chiba, Kanagawa and Ibaraki prefectures have so far been destroyed, damaged or affected by flooding. As of before 6 am Wednesday, more than 24,700 households in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures remained without electricity.
