Traffic Police to intensify crackdown on drunk driving, road rage during festivals

Thinking of drinking and driving during the upcoming festive season, hoping that traffic police too will be in a festive mood and let you off the hook for road rule violations that put your own life and that of fellow road users at risk? Stop thinking that way, for Metropolitan Traffic Police Division plans to intensify security checks, specifically for drunk-driving, during Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals.

Milan Basnet, senior superintendent of police at MTPD, said they will intensify security checks during festivities to avert road accidents arising from drunk and rash driving.

MTPD has also made special arrangements to prevent drivers of means of public transport heading to and from the Kathmandu Valley from carrying passengers beyond capacity of vehicles. Through such arrangements, MTPD also plans to take prevent transporters from collecting exorbitant fares.

According to Basnet, MTPD is also establishing help desks in different parts of the valley in a bid to prevent overcrowding of public vehicles. He appealed people to contact MTPD or officers at help desk if they find drivers of public vehicles flouting traffic rules.

MTPD plans to set up such desks in a number of places like New and Old Busparks, Kalanki, Koteshwor, Gaushala, Balkhu, Airport, Sundhara, Jorpati, Machhapokhari and Satdobato.
