Tamor havoc in Taplejung: Two bazaars, one settlement in peril

Taplejung, July 10

Landslides that occurred at Sawadin VDC of Taplejung district on Saturday night caused the Tamor River to change its course, putting two bazaars and a settlement at risk. The landslides have created a lake of sorts putting Thumba Besi settlement as well as Handrung and Dovan VDCs at high risk.

The change of the swollen river’s course has come as a respite for Mitlung Bazaar. Police said the bazaar is no longer under threat.

The lake is draining gradually, but Thumba Besi settlement as well as Dovan and Handrung bazaars downstream continue to be under great risk.

At Sawadin VDC-1, flooding has caused inundation of Jiwan Labung’s house, police said. There were no casualties as there was no one in the house at that time.

Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel have rushed to the site, but they have not been able to drain out the lake fast.
