Suspend all mountaineering activities until rain subsides, says DoT

Kathmandu, September 18

The Department of Tourism has asked expedition companies to wait until the monsoon rains subside before attempting to climb any mountains in the country. The Metrological and Forecasting Division said that the rain, which started on Tuesday, will continue for a few more days.

The division informed DoT that rain is likely to continue till at least Thursday and has asked expedition organisers to take precautions. The DoT has also asked organisers to make sure their clients are kept in safe accommodation and asked them to avoid climbing activities.

“We ask all agencies to take this seriously. The weather is not favourable for climbing and we want them to make sure all their clients are safe. We want the organisers to only indulge in mountain activities if the weather permits,” DoT’s statement reads.

So far 395 mountaineers from 47 expedition teams have received route permits for climbing different mountain peaks in Nepal including the Mount Everest for this autumn season.
