Surkhet locals block road to protest pollution

Locals block a road in Surkhet complaining excessive dust, on Thursday, February 25, 2021.

Surkhet, February 25

Locals of Birendranagar in Surkhet, the provincial capital of Karnali, have blocked a road at the local Hatiya Line protesting pollution there.

The locals blocked the road in Birendranagar municipality-6 since Thursday morning claiming the vehicles there emitted too much dust as contractors left the road maintenance halfway.

Local trader Bhuwan Gyawali says they were forced to block the road as the dust affected their business. It has been already one year since the authorities began maintenance works, but it has not been complete, according to him.

“We repeatedly appealed to the contractors and locally elected officials to complete it on time. But, they did not listen to us,” according to him.

“The chief minister, ministers, and the mayor among others travel along this road inside fancy vehicles,” another trader Kumar Shrestha says, “But, the dust coming from those vehicles have damaged over 50 per cent of the goods in our shops.”
