Kathmandu, October 24

In the wake of several controversies about Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana’s roles and responsibilities, all justices and officials of the umbrella organisation of Nepali lawyers, Nepal Bar Association, will be holding a meeting on Monday.

Of late, several stakeholders including former judges have demanded that Chief Justice Rana resign from his position as he has been accused of partnering with the executive on various occasions during the premiership of KP Sharma Oli and Sher Bahadur Deuba.

In addition, lawyers and court insiders say the top judge of the country is unwilling to introduce the proposed new system of assigning cases to benches at the court. Currently, the chief justice enjoys a prerogative to form benches and allocate cases, and if the new system is introduced, an automatic system based on software will do that.

Expressing concerns over these issues, the bar had held a meeting with Chief Justice Rana today, during which the two sides have agreed to hold a meeting involving all justices of the apex court tomorrow, bar president Chandeshwar Shrestha informs.
