Kathmandu, September 28
A team of India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) allegedly beat a Nepali youth in the border area of Biratnagar on Saturday.
The incident took place in Darauna, a border area near Biratnagar, where SSB personnel allegedly assaulted 28-year-old Anuj Kamat of Biratnagar Metropolitan City-2.
According to police, a dispute broke out between Kamat and SSB personnel as he was returning to Nepal from India. During the confrontation, Kamat allegedly threw a stone at an SSB personnel, hitting the security officer.
After Kamat crossed into Nepal, SSB personnel reportedly pursued him, pulled him back towards the no-man’s land area and beat him before taking him towards the Indian side.
Nepal’s Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel were also present at the scene when the incident occurred.
A video of the incident circulated on social media shows Nepali security personnel initially attempting to stop Kamat. However, they appear to take no further action when SSB personnel begin beating him. Several people who had gathered at the scene can also be seen holding Kamat as he attempted to flee.
The video shows SSB personnel taking Kamat into custody and beating him with batons before taking him towards India. After keeping him in custody and assaulting him for some time, the SSB handed him over to Nepal Police.
The Area Police Office, Rani, kept Kamat in custody for a day before releasing him to his family on Sunday.
Police said Kamat is a drug user and was not in a normal state when the dispute with the SSB personnel occurred.
Makendra Kumar Mishra, deputy superintendent of police and spokesperson for the Morang District Police Office, said Kamat was released in the presence of his wife on Sunday and sent home.
