Shashanka Koirala blames president for republicanism’s unpopularity

Nepali Congress leader Shashanka Koirala

Kathmandu, July 21

Nepali Congress General Secretary Shashanka Koirala has claimed the number of people claiming the monarchy was better than the republic is increasing due to President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

Speaking at a function organised on the occasion of BP Koirala Memorial Day in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Koirala, a son of the founder of the Nepali Congress whom the party commemorated by organising various functions today, said Bhandari’s some of the activities gave a message that she was the president of the ruling Nepal Communist Party.

Koirala’s comment follows the president’s frequent meetings with top leaders of the ruling party when an intra-party dispute is at its peak. Many believe Bhandari still influences and gets influenced by the party whom she was a member of before getting the top position.

Meanwhile, Koirala also criticised his party’s president Sher Bahadur Deuba, adding the leaders opposing his leadership would field one single candidate in the party’s next general convention scheduled for the next year.
