Self-styled ‘commander’ of armed outfits arrested in Kathmandu

Police have arrested Baikuntha Belbase (41) of Siddhara, Arghakhanchi district, from Kathmandu on the charge of involvement in extortions.

Belbase, a temporary resident of Manmaiju, Kathmandu, used to issue extort traders and other individuals by issuing threats to traders and other individuals over the phone and through mail, according to the Metropolitan Police Crime Division.

According to police, Belbase used to identify himself as a commander of Al-Qaeda’s South Asia chapter and self-styled Tiger Liberation Front. Identifying himself as Agni Chattan (Fire and Brimstone, Vivash and Asina (Hailstone), this man used to issue threats to his targets over the phone or via mail.

MPCD said it arrested Belbase well before Dashain. About a year ago, Belbase and three others had walked free from jail after spending around 27 months for committing abduction and other organised crimes.

Police recovered a letter seeking Rs 13 lakh in the name of Al-Qaeda, apart from Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and photos of different individuals.
