Russian Embassy to continue Telegram updates despite Nepal ban

Nepal moves to shut down Telegram over crime concerns

Kathmandu, July 24

The Russian Embassy in Kathmandu has announced that it will continue to update its Telegram account, even though the Nepali government has shut down the social media platform citing its links to money laundering and online fraud activities.

Despite the ban on the Telegram app by the Government of Nepal, the embassy issued a statement saying that its official Telegram channel would remain active.

“We would like to inform you that the official Telegram channel of the Embassy continues to operate,” reads the statement. “However, due to the decision of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to block the platform within the country, access to our account may be subject to disruptions.”

The embassy also suggested an alternative, VK, Facebook and Instagram.

“We are making every effort to maintain stable communication and provide updates through alternative channels, including our website and other social media platforms (VK, Facebook, and Instagram),” reads the statement.

Both VK and Telegram are operated by the same individual.

On July 17  the Nepal Telecommunications Authority issued a notice directing service providers to immediately restrict access to the Telegram app. Since then, the platform has become inaccessible in Nepal.
