indra-hang-raiKathmandu, March 13

The Kathmandu District Court on Thursday convicted Indra Hang Rai, a central leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party’s student union, of rape. The court handed down an eight-year jail sentence to him.

A single bench of Judge Binod Kumar Pokharel also told him to provide Rs 150,000 in compensation to the victim.

In October last year, a woman had filed a complaint against him, claiming Rai, a friend of her sibling, raped her. The court yesterday observed that the victim’s claim was valid, informs the court staff, Ananda Shrestha.

The victim said the convict had called her to play Deusi-Bhailo during the Tihar festival that month but committed the crime taking her to a relative’s apartment in Makalbari of Kathmandu.

Rai was active in the student union of Ratna Rajya Campus in Kathmandu.
