A greater one-horned rhino has been found dead in a farm in Kawasoti, west of Chitwan National Park, officials said.
The rhino, believed to be six-seven years of age, was found dead on Mohan Lal Panthi’s farm in Kawasoti-10 on Sunday morning, Kawasoti Munuicpality deputy mayor Prem Shanker Mardaniya told Onlinekhabar. “We are yet to ascertain the cause of the death,” Lamachaur Forest User Group’s chief Basudev Paudel said. Police have now cordoned off the area where the animal was found dead.
The greater one-horned rhino is a protected species in Nepal and its killing is illegal. The Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal was established to conserve the rhinos, whose numbers fell due to a rise in poaching of its prized horn.
