Reconstruction of Degu Taleju temple completed

Lalitpur, September 8

The reconstruction of the Degu Taleju Temple in the Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been completed.

The temple was severely damaged during the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. The exterior reconstruction of the historic temple has been completed, while work on the interior is still ongoing in the second phase, said Leela Pathak, Chief of the Patan Monuments Conservation and Durbar Supervision Office.

Pathak mentioned that the largest and tallest temple in Lalitpur will be inaugurated after the completion of the interior work and an atonement worship ceremony. “The temple, which dates back to the Malla era, has been reconstructed in its original style,” she added.

The Government of Japan provided financial assistance of Rs 130 million for the reconstruction of the temple.

According to Pathak, most heritage sites in Lalitpur have been restored, while reconstruction work on a few remaining sites is still in progress.
