As days pass since the devastating flood, despair is growing among families of people who remain unaccounted for. Meanwhile, more people have been reported missing by relatives in various districts of Madhes Province.
According to the Madhes Province Police Office in Janakpurdham, the number of people reported missing in the Rasuwa flood had reached 220 as of 10 am Friday. The provincial police office said only 195 people had been reported missing two days earlier.
According to SSP Prabhu Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson for the Madhes Province Police Office, 38 of those reported missing have since made contact with their families. The deaths of two others have been confirmed. SSP Dhakal said one person each from Saptari and Bara died in the disaster. A total of 180 people remain unaccounted for following the flood.
District-wise, Saptari has the highest number of missing people, with 52 reported cases. Of them, three have made contact, one has died, and 48 remain missing. In Parsa, three of the 46 people reported missing have made contact, while 43 remain unaccounted for.
In Bara, four of the 30 people reported missing have made contact, one has died, and 25 remain missing. Similarly, in Rautahat, six of the 20 reported missing have made contact, while 14 remain unaccounted for. In Sarlahi, six of the 27 reported missing have made contact, while 21 remain missing.
In Mahottari, seven of the 17 reported missing have made contact, while 10 remain unaccounted for. In Dhanusha, seven of the 14 reported missing have made contact, while seven remain unaccounted for, SSP Dhakal said. In Siraha, two of the 14 reported missing have made contact, while 12 remain unaccounted for.
The police compiled the figures based on applications submitted and information provided by family members and relatives over the phone.
