Kathmandu, June 24

People are complaining that they have to wait for hours to register their names on the voter list. Some in Kathmandu are having to wait for as much as four hours to get their names on the list.

Since the government has given people from outside Kathmandu the option to register their names in Kathmandu’s District Election Office, hundreds of people are queuing to register their names by July 15, the government deadline.

The queue is irritating people as they feel it is unnecessary to have to queue to fill a form that can be done online. In addition, poor and slow government service is making it even worse for them to register their names on the voter list.

District Election Office says it understands people’s concerns but adds it cannot do anything as more than 1,000 people are queuing up to get their names registered on the voter list for the coming elections.

In order to make it easy, the Election Commission had set aside four places in Kathmandu where people could register their names. But, all four are full of people as it shows the government’s lack of planning.

“People from all over the country are trying to register their name in Kathmandu; it’s hard to handle this,” says District Election Officer Thakur Prasad Bhattarai.
