Kathmandu, May 2

The Patan High Court on Tuesday convicted notorious Prithvi Malla of a fatal hit and run in Budhanilakantha of Kathmandu in December 2019. The court also called a next hearing to pronounce the sentence.

As per the court rules, another date can be assigned to pronounce the sentence if the sentence will be three years or longer. It means Malla will be sent to jail for at least three years.

In March 2022, the Kathmandu High Court convicted Malla of the crime but restricted the imprisonment to just six months along with a fine of Rs 1,000. Dissatisfied with the decision, the government attorneys then went to the high court.

The attorneys have demanded a 10-year jail term and Rs 100,000 fine for the case of vehicular homicide.

A car driven by Prithvi Malla, who did not have a driving licence and was drunk, had hit a pedestrian to death in Budhanilakantha, on December 14, 2019.

It is believed that Malla belongs to an influential family and he holds the potential to affect judicial verdicts also. When he was in judicial custody in connection with the case, in July 2020, a division bench of Supreme Court justices Sapana Pradhan Malla and Manoj Kumar Sharma released him on Rs 500,000 bail.
