Prachanda writes to Deuba, says party has recalled its ministers

Kathmandu, January 17

CPN Maoist Centre chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal has formally informed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba that his party has decided to recall its ministers.

In a letter to the Prime Minsiter, delivered by minister without portfolio Giriraj Mani Pokharel, the Maoist chief said his party decided to recall the ministers to pave the way for the new government.

The former Prime Minister also alleged that the Deuba government has not taken concrete steps towards the transfer of power, misused revenue and taken decisions a care-taker Cabinet should not have taken. “In this context, it was not right for us to stay on in the government. That is why we have decided to recall our ministers,” Dahal said in the letter.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba reshuffled his Cabinet on October 17 last year in response to the Maoists’ announcement that the party will forge an electoral alliance with the main opposition, the UML. Following the reshuffle, ministers from the Maoist party were stripped of their portfolios. However, the party decided to stay on in the government to “thwart the government’s plans to postpone the election

The announcement comes as the UML and Maoists work on a power-sharing agreement along with plans to unify the two parties.
