Power supply obstructed in flood-hit eastern Terai

A pole collapses

Kathmandu, August 13

Supply of electricity has been obstructed in eastern Terai as floods destroyed various infrastructures used in power supply. Most places of the region are in darkness since Saturday.

Nepal Electricity Authority says many of its substations have been inundated whereas poles along transmission lines have collapsed.

NEA Department of Operations Chief Bishnu Kumar Shrestha says most places Siraha, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa districts are deprived of electricity.

Though the level of water decreases at inundated substations, power supply cannot resume immediately as the submerged equipment need to be checked after taking them out of water, according to Shrestha.

He says it might take around two days to provide uninterrupted electricity service after the rain stops.

Though floods have affected life in some parts of western Terai as well, the electricity supply has not been obstructed there, Shrestha says.
