Kathmandu, September 25
Traffic police have urged motorists not to travel along the river corridors in the Kathmandu Valley as water levels in rivers and streams begin to rise.
The warning came after floodwaters reached the bridge at Chyasal in Lalitpur. Traffic police have been making announcements through loudspeakers, urging people to avoid travelling along the corridors.
Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Ramshahpath, said monitoring had been increased in areas along the rivers.
“As water levels in Kathmandu’s streams and rivers have risen, we have also increased monitoring of riverside areas. Announcements are being made asking people not to travel along the corridors,” Subedi said.
He said traffic police have also asked people to remove vehicles parked along roads near rivers and streams. Police personnel have been deployed at Chyasal Bridge and other vulnerable locations, he added.
According to meteorologists at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, rainfall in Nepal is being caused by a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal.
The system is gradually moving westward. Meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane said districts from Bagmati Province westward are likely to receive more rainfall from Saturday compared with the eastern parts of the country.
