Play ‘Milarepa’ directed by Buddhi Tamang stages at Mandala Theatre

The play Milarepa, based on the life story of the Tibetan Buddhist master Milarepa, began staging at Mandala Theatre on Tuesday.

The play artistically depicts Milarepa’s journey from childhood to enlightenment through penance and meditation. Written by Chang Nyön Heruka, it is jointly directed by Buddhi Tamang and Umesh Tamang, with theatrical adaptation by Rabin Tamang.

The production explores profound spiritual themes such as sin, repentance, meditation, and liberation.

Rupesh Lama plays the lead role of Milarepa, while the cast includes Ramila Moktan, Bikash Lama, Sanumaya Tamang, Rasmila Tamang, Riya Lama, Bijay Tamang, Bal Bahadur Rai, Nilan Karki, Manikulung Rai, Rohini Lama, Pushkar Karki, Bishwo Syangbo, Sabita Thing, Sunita Tamang Dong, Sudip Khatiwada, Bijay Tyuba, Ratna Mangal, Tashi Lama, Ajay Lama, Pawan Kumar Gole, and Sabita Tamang.

Music for the play is conceptualized by Aditya Katwal, with vocals by Ani Choying Drolma, Saresh Lama, and Shubhalal Glan Tamang. Director Buddhi Tamang said the fusion of dance and dialogue makes the entire narrative deeply emotional and inspiring.

Milarepa will run regularly from November 4 to December 7. The play aims to impart a message of self-purification, forgiveness, and the importance of spiritual practice.

Meanwhile, Khamari, another play that was paused before Dashain, has also resumed its performance from Tuesday and will continue until Thursday.
