Kathmandu, March 15

With the Covid impact on the wane in Nepal, the number of Nepali students to go abroad for education is increasing at a high rate.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology says it has been issuing permits (no-objection certificates or NOCs) to 1,000 to 1,200 Nepali students daily.

The ministry’s NOC Section chief Hari Prasad Niraula says the number of students flying to Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada and India is high. “If you talk about the last week, the pressure is not normal. It has been difficult for us to provide services,” he says.

“If the trend continues,” he questions, “What happens with Nepal’s higher education after around five years?”

Meanwhile, the section says it will verify the no-objection certificates online only as calling the applicants in person resulted in a massive crowd every day.
