New High Court judges take oath of office

Kathmandu January, 18

Eighty individuals recently nominated by Nepal’s Judicial Council to the post of High Court Judge have taken their oath of office.

The judges, who were appointed last week amid controversy, were administered their oath to secrecy in the presence of Chief Justice Sushila Karki.

The function was organised outside the Supreme Court’s main building, which is being retro-fitted after it sustained damage during the 2015 earthquake.

The Judicial Council, in a late night decision on Thursday, made the nominations as it grappled with dispute among political parties. Nepal Bar Association has already said the Council needs to review its decision. However, Law Minister Ajay Shanker Nayak has said the decision was final, and would not be reversed.
