Nepali Congress to register note of dissent on Citizenship Act Amendment Bill

Kathmandu, June 21

The main opposition party Nepali Congress has decided to register a note of dissent if the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee decides to propose a seven-year threshold for women marrying Nepali citizens to get naturalised citizenship of Nepal.

The committee is certain to finalise its decision and forward the bill to amend the Citizenship Act to the full house for further discussion because ruling Nepal Communist Party, which holds the majority in the panel, has decided to endorse the threshold. The panel to scheduled to discuss the bill later this afternoon.

In this context, leaders of the opposition party discussed the issue this morning and decided to register its protest to the provision, a participant of the meeting informs. The party has been demanding that the existing provision about naturalised citizenship is not changed.
