Nepali Congress obstructs House of Representatives meeting as well

Nepali Congress lawmakers obstruct a meeting of the House of Representatives, on Sunday, January 6, 2019.

Kathmandu, January 21

The main opposition party Nepali Congress on Monday obstructed a meeting of the House of Representatives as well. Earlier this morning, the party had obstructed the meeting of the National Assembly.

As soon as the Lower House meeting began today, the parliamentary party’s deputy leader, Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar, sought time to speak. He said the government was dissolving two hospitals named after Congress leaders, Girija Prasad Koirala and Sushila Koirala, with political prejudices.

He demanded that the government bring them under the jurisdiction of the federal government at the earliest.

Questioning if the government wanted to erase the existence of Nepali Congress, he claimed his party had a leading role in institutionalising achievements of various democratic movements.

He also demanded that the government make corrections to the National Medical Education Bill the government was preparing to table in the House meeting today as demanded by activist Dr Govinda KC.

After Gachhadar’s speech, all lawmakers of the party stood up from their seats, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the meeting.
